Call for Papers: Open Sessions
Acquisition and Collection Development Section
"Networks of Digital Collections and Digital Libraries and How They Present New Opportunities for Local Collection Development and Management"
The Acquisition and Collection Development Section is seeking proposals for papers to be presented at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Wrocław, Poland, from 19-25 August, 2017.
The program will focus on networks of digital collections and digital libraries and on new collection development and management opportunities that may emerge from these. Digital collections and digital libraries extend the breadth of print collections, enlarge the scale of scholarly and cultural evidence, and support innovative research and lifelong learning. They allow us to create collaboratively a new digital service environment, in which the library becomes responsible for configuring access to a shared world of information. In this networked online information space, users can discover, locate, access and, increasingly, use information. The scaled-up digital library service environment allows us to manage information about collections and items within collections, often throughout their entire life cycle. It supports the full range of administrative, business, and curatorial functions required by the library to manage, administer, monitor engagement with, and ensure fair use of its collections. Connected to larger inter-institutional networks, digital collections and digital libraries present new and important opportunities for collection development and management on a regional, national and international level. It is a perfect time for IFLA’s Acquisition and Collection Development Section to conceptualize libraries’ cooperation on digital collections, to demonstrate how digital collections and digital libraries are created, and how they connect in a network environment regionally, nationally or internationally.
We are kindly asking for appropriate submissions for presentations no longer than 15 minutes each and shedding light on:
- Case studies on the creation of Digital Libraries in a consortial environment, with examples of their use.
- Examples of new venues for historical heritage collections built via an inter-institutional aggregation of the distributed digital content owned locally in print.
- Digital Collections and how they influence maintenance and or preservation: Case studies on, for example:
- The impact of networks of digital collections upon local/collaborative preservation or de-selection of print holdings.
- Selection and collection development criteria libraries may have created in order to develop new digital collections of retro-digitized materials and cultural heritage.
- Extending local collections:
- Examples of how libraries may have leveraged local print or microform collections to link these to the full text available and accessible in digitized networks.
- Illustrate how these networks can meet all users’ needs as, for example, in any user requiring different text options due to visual or learning issues
Cases studies (i.e. HathiTrust, Europeana, or other large digital libraries) demonstrating how creating libraries at this large scale is impacting the way individual library collections and services are evolving, are particularly welcome.
