Call for Papers: Open Sessions

LGBTQ Users Special Interest Group

Theme:

"Intersectionality"

“When you center the lives of those who are on the margins of the dominant society, you create a system that better serves us all.”

(Adapted from Jama Shelton, PhD)

For IFLA WLIC 2017 we’ve chosen intersectionality as the theme of our program.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning Users Special Interest Group (LGBTQ) seeks submissions from scholars and practitioners that address the ways in which libraries can provide access to information relating to LGBTQ+ lives as they intersect with the lived experiences of other identities.

A list of possible topics includes intersections between LGBTQ+ lives and one or more of these:

  • Race/culture
  • Gender
  • Religious beliefs
  • Socioeconomic status/class
  • Disabilities
  • Physical and mental health
  • Aging
  • Legal status
  • Refugees/immigrants
  • The criminal justice system
  • Housing status
  • Age

Public, academic, school and special librarians, as well as other professionals, are encouraged to offer submissions that provide insights and/or practical actions related to intersectional LGBTQ+ lives. The LGBTQ SIG encourages submissions that highlight the ways in which libraries can help our users navigate society at large, expanding on the 2017 WLIC theme of “Libraries. Solidarity. Society.”

Presenters are expected to prepare a formal paper, as well as a PowerPoint (or other audio/visual) presentation. All presenters’ works, with abstracts and links to full papers, will be offered on the conference website. Papers and presentations may be in any of the official IFLA languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish and Russian. However, an accompanying translation of all papers into English should be provided. Efforts will be made to provide translations into other official IFLA languages as well.
