The IFLA Women, Information and Libraries Special Interest Group (WIL) invites colleagues to submit proposals for its satellite session to be held at the University Library in Bratislava, Slovakia, 16-17 August 2017.

Scope / Objectives of the Satellite

The satellite meeting will discuss current library and information initiatives which are supporting and improving the lives of women living in conflict situations due, but not limited to, war; political instability; terrorism; humanitarian crisis; extremism; etc., as well as lessons learnt from these initiatives which could be applied to other contexts, geographical areas, or in the future.

Proposals should include examples of work by library and information professionals:

  • Providing access to human rights, gender equality and women specific information to women living in conflict situations.
  • Supporting women living in conflict situations by providing a common space for them and / or their children to learn, share and feel safe.
  • Collecting and preserving the memories of women living in, or escaped from, conflict situations.
  • Bridging the cultural gap faced by women displaced from their own cultures due to conflict situations.

Please note that we are looking for papers that will provoke thoughts, challenge perceptions and kickstart discussions, and authors / presenters might be expected to foster dialogue and professional discussions with the audience.

Submission Guidelines

Both abstracts and full papers should be submitted as an MS Word file  to:

Proposals should include:

  • Title of the paper
  • Abstract of 200-250 words, summarising the paper
  • 3-6 keywords
  • Author(s) name, professional affiliation(s) including organisation, city and country, email address(es), and brief biographical note(s) (no full CVs please).

Colleagues from around the world, especially first-time presenters and new professionals, are warmly encouraged to submit abstracts.

Proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel from the Women, Information and Libraries Special Interest Group. Papers and presentations should be unpublished, original works. IFLA has first publication rights to papers selected.

If your abstract is selected, your paper should follow the IFLA Guidelines for Authors.

All papers that are presented at the WLIC 2017 will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Authors of accepted papers must complete the IFLA Authors’ Permission Form.

At least one of the paper’s authors must be present to deliver a summary of the paper during the programme. Presentations will be made in English as unfortunately no simultaneous translation can be provided. It is strongly recommended that the presentation is supported by a visual element such as PowerPoint. Presentations summarising the full paper will be no longer than 15 minutes, to allow plenty of time for questions and group discussions.

All expenses, including registration, travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA. Letters of invitation can be issued to presenters upon request. Registration for the IFLA Congress is not required to attend this satellite meeting.


Submission of abstracts: Sunday 5th March 2017.

Notification of acceptance: Monday 13th March 2017 (authors who do not receive a response by this date may assume that their abstract has not been selected).
